Medications cannot cure Crohn's disease but they reduce symptoms and help control the condition. Ocassionally they induce remission of the disease for a given period of time. These drugs can reduce inflammation throughout your body but have side effects including acne and an increased risk of infection, osteoporosis, high blood pressure, excessive hair growth, diabetes, and disorders of the eye including glaucoma and cataracts.
This drug is used in certain forms of leukemia, rheumatoid arthritis and severe psoriasis. In the field of gastroenterology it may be effective in treating inflammatory bowel disease, especially Crohn's disease.
Methotrexate belongs to the class of drugs known as antimetabolites. Antimetabolites impede the body’s natural chemical processes, such as DNA production and cell division. They are helpful in cancer treatments, as they will prevent cancer cells from thriving.
It should be taken exactly as prescribed by the doctor. A physical will tailor the dosage to the needs of each individual patient. Methotrexate may be given as a tablet, infusion or injection. For Crohn’s disease, methotrexate is commonly given by weekly injection in a physician’s office or hospital.

Asides from fighting Crohn’s disease, methotrexate blocks cell metabolism, it is prescribed for conditions where abnormal cell growth is a problem such as psoriasis or cancer.
This is a chemotherapy drug initially used to treat certain forms of leukemia. It has an effect on the bone marrow cells and other actively dividing cells in the body. It also has an effect on the immune system so that in certain disorders where the immune system is overactive, such as rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis and inflammatory bowel disease, it has found a role. This is a potent drug and should not be used unless there is full understanding by the patient and close follow up by the physician.
